SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Old Home, Minnesota’s leading brand of cottage cheese, took top honors in the cottage cheese category at the United States Championship Cheese Contest. Often known by its blue container, Old Home small curd cottage cheese once again captured the gold award. Old Home large curd, in the yellow container, took home the silver, while Old Home lowfat small curd, found in the pink container, claimed the bronze award.
This award is presented bi-annually by the non-profit Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA), and recognizes the best dairy products in more than 50 classes from across the United States. Over 1,336 cheese and butter entries were received this year, making it the largest contest in U.S. history.
The 2009 win was the second time in a row Old Home claimed the Best of Class prize. “For a small, Minnesota dairy company to compete on a national level and beat out the big guys is a huge honor. We couldn’t be prouder to be recognized as the national cottage cheese champion,” said Geoff Murphy, CEO of Old Home Foods.
In 1981, after nearly a century of Wisconsin cheese competitions, WCMA offered its contest to cheese makers throughout the nation, and the United States Championship Cheese Contest was born.
