SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS Minnesota based Old Home Foods and Minnesota FoodShare have partnered to create the “Put a Lid on MN Hunger” program, a lid redemption program designed to help feed fellow Minnesotans. Old Home Foods will donate 10 cents for each lid redeemed from Old Home Sour Cream and Old Home Organic Milk products, with a guaranteed minimum donation of $10,000 to Minnesota FoodShare which will help feed thousands of Minnesotans. In fact, every 10 redeemed lids from Old Home Foods Sour Cream and Organic Milk will feed a hungry Minnesotan for a day (Source: Minnesota FoodShare). Consumers can find Old Home Foods Sour Cream and Organic Milk at most Twin Cities grocery stores and at area SuperTarget stores. Old Home Foods Sour Cream is also available at area Super Walmart stores. The lid redemption mail-in address can be obtained at www.OldHomeFoods.com.
The 10-month program will kick off in March which is Minnesota FoodShare’s annual March Campaign, the state’s largest food drive designed to restock more than 260 food shelves across Minnesota. “As a Minnesota favorite dairy brand since 1925, Old Home Foods has a history of community involvement and understands the importance of giving back to the local community, especially in times like this with the declining economy leaving many people out of work and nowhere else to turn but their local food shelves,” said Geoff Murphy, CEO of Old Home Foods. “We are proud to partner with Minnesota FoodShare on the “Put a Lid on MN Hunger” program. We can all make a difference in our fellow Minnesotans’ lives by participating in this program and sending in our lids.”
The timing is critical for Minnesota food shelves because they are getting empty after the holiday giving season and yet the need continues to rise. In fact, food shelf usage is at an all time high which is why Minnesota based Old Home Foods has partnered with Minnesota FoodShare on the “Put a Lid on MN Hunger” program. The statistics show the increasing need to refill food shelves in Minnesota:
In 2008, there were more than two million visits to Minnesota food shelves and food shelf usage continues to increase.
Almost one million Minnesotans live in households struggling to put food on the table.
Half of all food shelf visitors are children and twenty percent are seniors.
In the suburbs, the working poor make up sixty percent of food shelf users.
In the last year, many people have visited the food shelf for the first time. Some of them used to donate to the food shelves and now find themselves in need of the food shelf services. (Source: Minnesota FoodShare)
